Help With An Empty Property
Mendip Council are committed to helping residents to bring empty properties back into use.
Empty properties are a wasted resource, especially when demand for affordable good quality housing in the District remains high.
The Private Sector Housing Team is responsible for bringing empty properties back into use and can offer advice, and in some cases funding, to assist property owners in making affordable homes available for local people.
How you can help us
We need to locate all the empty properties in the area so that we can provide advice and support to owners to bring them back into use. You can help if you own, or live near an empty property by completing the form below.
Do you own an empty property?
We can offer advice and support to help you bring your empty property back into use. If your empty property is in need of repair, we have a grant and loan scheme available to support you in completing essential work to help improve the property for rental, sale or for your own residence.
Financially - it makes sense
Earn money: The demand for affordable decent homes in Mendip remains high. Empty properties could be generating rental income.
Save money: After 2 years of being empty, Council Tax increases to 150%. Government are currently considering increasing this to 200%. Why pay this when the standard rate could be paid by the occupier? An empty property is also likely to deteriorate over time costing more money long term to renovate.
Empty Homes Strategy
We offer help, advice and financial assistance if you work with us to bring empty homes back into use. But, if we need to start using our enforcement powers it could end up costing you more.
If you would like further advice or are interested in finding out more about the financial assistance available, please complete the form below or call us on 0300 303 8588.
Bringing empty properties back into use can be costly if they require extensive renovations. The government has introduced a number of tax changes, which may help with the overall costs. Additionally if you are considering selling your empty property, changes to capital gains tax will mean that less capital gains tax is payable.
