Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP)

If you require additional help with your housing costs on top of the housing benefit you currently receive, you may be entitled to Discretionary Housing Payments.

DHPs are means tested payments made at the discretion of the local authority. They are not payments of housing benefit. Central government gives the council a limited amount of funding to administer the scheme each year. Any spending above this allocation up to the legal limit (two a half times the annual funding) has to be met by the local authority.
