Is Planning Permission Required?

You don't need planning permission for some types of building work and there are a number of options available, both formal and informal, that can help you find out.

Informal Advice

Advice on whether or not you require planning permission is available on the Planning Portal:

Formal Advice

If you require formal confirmation on whether or not planning permission is required for your proposed development you are advised to apply for a Lawful Development Certificate.

You can apply electronically through the Planning Portal or by completing an application form.

Additional information on Lawful Development Certificates can be found on the Planning Portal and also on our website:

Certificate of Lawful Use or Development (Proposed) Application Checklist

Please note that the level of information required for an application for a Lawful Development Certificate will require the submission of evidence to demonstrate that the development is, on the balance of probabilities, lawful.
