The council's benefit section provides a streamlined process for the assessing of new claims, which means that your entitlement to housing and/or council tax support can be calculated while you wait.

Please ensure you check for any entitlement to apply for Universal Credit before you make a claim for housing benefit, any delay in making your Universal Credit claim may affect the start date of your award.
During this initial conversation, the advisor will go through the questions on the benefits application form and tell you exactly what information and evidence will be required for you to bring in on the day of the appointment. You will be able to make an appointment for your meeting on a date and time to suit you. The meeting will be held in a private meeting room at the Council Offices in Shepton Mallet.
Please note that the meeting may take up to two hours.
When you come in for your appointment, please remember to bring with you all the necessary supporting evidences, i.e. wage slips, banks statements, etc. Please ensure any proofs you bring along are original documents.
The application form will be completed at the time of your appointment so although you do not need to complete the application form before you come in, you must know the answers to the questions on the form that apply to your claim. As long as all the relevant information is supplied at the meeting your claim will be assessed while you wait and in most cases (our target is 90%) you will be given an indicative assessment before you leave. Official notification letters will be sent to you within two days of your appointment.
