Important Update: 28th September 2016
We will control street trading across the Mendip district council area from Monday 5th December 2016. From that time if you wish to trade in our area you must have our consent to trade, unless you are covered by a statutory or local exemption (as laid out in our Street Trading Policy [778kb]).
To obtain the consent of the Council to trade you must submit the completed application form [273kb], pay the application fee [100kb] and satisfy all relevant requirements. The application form includes guidance on the process for applicants and those persons that have an interest in an application. The policy and guidance tell applicants the minimum time period they must allow for us to process an application.
If you wish to trade in the area after 5th December 2016, please allow sufficient time for an application to be determined.
Where we receive an application from an existing trader in our area prior to 5pm on Friday 2nd December 2016, they will be permitted to continue to trade until we have determined their application. This is to assist all parties through the transitional process as we commence this new service.
To assist applicants we will host three 'surgeries' for those wanting to apply, where they feel they need some additional help. These sessions will be operated on pre - booked basis and will allow prospective applicants to speak to a member of the team about the process. We will also be able to accept applications at these sessions.
Please use these sessions for help that you may need with an application, as we expect a high demand for this service and we will be unable to provide intensive 1 - 2 - 1 assistance for applicants over the telephone or in person in the first few weeks of operating this service.
These sessions will take place at the Mendip District Council Offices at Cannards Grave Road, Shepton Mallet, BA4 5BT. If you plan to attend please let us know by email at email@example.com Parking is restricted for visitors, and so you may need to park off site.

Monday 21st November 2016 - 2 sessions:
09:00 - 13:00 hours - in the main reception area of the Council Offices.
17:00 - 20:00 hours - in the Council Chamber
Wednesday 23rd November 2016:
13:00 - 16:00 hours - in the main reception area.
You will be able to book 15 minute appointments for 1-2-1 assistance to discuss technical queries about your application or to ensure that your application is complete. These appointments will be available as shown above. You must email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to book a slot and you may need to be flexible to take advantage of an appointment, because they are likely to be popular and oversubscribed.
We will not be able to see personal callers regarding street trading queries until the week commencing Monday 21st November, in any event. This is to allow us to process more effectively the first wave of applications that we receive.
Full Council approved the proposals for implementing Street Trading controls across the Mendip district area at its meeting on 26th September 2016. The Members voted in favour of the following:-
1. Approving the Street Trading Policy [778kb].
2. Approving the schedule of charges [100kb] for the service.
3. Confirming the Council's intention to designate all streets in the Mendip district area as consent streets under street trading control.
4. Rescinding any existing designations of streets.
